I'll be working on this maple in the next couple of days. I've waited to do the work until I can also repot to avoid bleeding. I'm hopeful it will turn out pretty nice, in a mature spreading maple form. Right now it needs to be reined in a little first.

The picture not taken square to one of the sides is in the vicinity of the front.

That's an amazing beginning!

Great front. It just sings.

Nice material bwaynef! From your last pic, was wondering if your going to keep both trunks on the left.

@kingsville grower made me a ridiculous offer at a time when I'd decided not to spend any money. (I'm starting to see a pattern.) Then he got "ridiculouser". :) He didn't want to take it home from the Silhouette show in Kannapolis. He had one other that was slightly smaller. I **ALMOST** asked him if that price was for both. Mark, if you're reading this, I'm still happily married.

I wasn’t able to nail the front at this repot, but I wasn’t comfortable removing any more than I took off. In a year or two, I ought to be able to work the nebari a little more and turn it just a smidge.

My forearms are sore from concave cutting the roots all the way back up to right under the trunk. (I need a better small saw.) I’d give you a picture of THAT but my phone died as I tried to take the picture.

Beginners question. Would assume that you are not talking about bleeding form pruning the tree considering that you have just repotted it? Are you maybe talking about bleeding from the cutting off the bigger roots?

A lot of times maples, particularly japanese maples (or I've heard the term high water-moving maples) bleed at certain times of the year when they're pruned, early spring being one. While its not early spring exactly, we've had some spring-like weather here lately, and never really had winter, so trees here are beginning to "move" and are in need of repotting over the next couple of weeks. One of the ways that bleeding can be minimized is by cutting the roots. I can think of a couple of explanations, but I don't have scientific proof so I'll just trust what's been observed.

The repot took longer than I expected it would so I didn't get a chance to reduce it yet. Hopefully that'll come soon.

Here it is after cutback. I’ve still got to move some branching around, maybe. Did I miss anything blatant?
