I took this tree home with me from a nursery I worked at two years ago. It had a high graft on it (some sort of red dissected cultivar) that died, so I cut it off and grew this tree for a year and a half. It was repotted and lightly root pruned this spring, but that is the only work I have done on it since bringing it home....

Until I decided to go ahead and start reducing some of the top of the tree.. Here is how it looks today.

Any ideas and/or suggestions on where to go from here would be appreciated!

Hi jd_bonsai,
Yep, agree regarding grow til fat (girth). Might take 3-5 years plus.
See photo underneath for chop low in Spring etc. You could cut it lower than that if you want shorter 1st trunk section

I've had real good luck trunk chopping maples in mid to late winter. I am in the Deep South though and still protected the tree afterwards. But have exploded in growth.
