In my opinion you should start on building that trunk. That thick branch should be cut off. I like your plan for the new trunk

It has beautiful bark and nice radial roots

The grow box is perfect

its a really nice tree

Great start! Looks like it's growing vigorously. Are you planning on changing the planting angle?

Nice start @clem !

Can I please ask what nursery this Beni Chidori and your Deshojo (https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/acer-palmatm-deshojo-from-cutting.42618/) came from (in France, i assume)? Is it a pre-bonsai nursery or a nursery selling landscape trees?

Thank you
those very good trees come from " LES PEPINIERES BOTANIQUES ARMORICAINES" in Saint Roch 22390 Saint Adrien (France)

This nursery has no internet page, and the owner sell his trees to anybody (Bonsai enthusiasts are maybe 10% of his clients).
I took pics in this page (no need to understand french to look at it ^^) ->

The cuttings (and the owner of the nursery) ->

The palmatum trees ready to be sold (after 4 years of growth in the ground : in a secret place that no of his clients know) ->

Very rare cultivar in America and very traditional maple for Bonsai in Japan.

Or maybe keep the actual inclination (for example if the nebari is better like that) and make something like that virtual ->

Really great vision, love how this looks!!
I have a short fat Beni Chidori.. Its done overly well this first year I've had it. Black tips on leaves for the most part.
Will watch your thread to learn more about how the cultivar reacts to things :)

The new leaves look so red! I thought Benichidori spring leaves were supposed to be soft pink and then fade to green. Thats kind of why I put it on my "to buy" list after Peter Chan mentioned them a lot as a great cultivar.
Maybe I had the wrong impression about this cultivar, I already have deshojo so I dont really need another one that leaves out red-ish.
Anyway, nice progression

It has really red colors in November but in spring, Beni Chidori colors are more pink, and evolve with orange nuances during the season : (it's very different from the Deshojo cultivar has you can see on the coming pics)
