Cambium layer dieing results in the plant turning black. Often due to a fungal infection, but can also be natural die-back.

I woudl trim this section off to at least the next node.

Make sure you sterilise your cutting tool afterwards with rubbing alcohol or 50/50 bleach & water.

Sealing wounds that are upright will also help.
If cuts are sloped or at an angle, water doesn't accumulate. If you leave a (hollow) stem pointing upwards, then it's more likely to get some bacteria and fungi growing in there that could screw up the tissue below.

I'm not a big fan of using bleach on metal. 70%-80% ethanol soak for 15 minutes should work just fine.
