So, I just bought this 'october glory' red maple and I'm trying to see if I can salvage the nebari.

Is it too late to air layer?
Will the upper trunk survive (just above the nebari) if I air layer about 5-6 inches above the soil line?
Will it support two or three air layers at a time?

P.s. I'll send some more pictures of the nebari when the light is good.

Probably not too late.
The worry is that this will cut off the flow of carbohydrates from the leaves getting to the roots. IOW, the roots will have to survive on only stored carbs.

BUT!!! you've got some sucker leaves off the root stock now! KEEP those suckers as they will feed the roots during the process. Then it is basically a matter of patience. If you don't have enough adventitious roots on the layer before fall, you can just leave everything over winter and it will continue next year.
