Hi,

I was wondering how more experienced members like Mach5 would treat these wounds so it blends better into the trunk. Are there any special techniques to perform on it now or through the season?

Thanks

Marie, your problem is simple. It looks like you did not make your cut deep enough thus the wound heals leaving a bump as in your pic. You need to recut it again going deeper to make sure it heals flat and more even with the trunk. You can refer to Peter Adams book "Bonsai with Japanese Maples" where he explains refinement techniques. After you make your cut(s) you should use a wound dressing such as cut paste to maintain moisture and promote faster healing.

Keep in mind of course that cuts no matter how well they've healed, they will be noticeable for a long time. Eventually they will blend in as the bark ages.

If you would like a branch there you better leave it like that in the hope that it will back bud. Ones it back buds and the branch is reasonable size You can carve the portion you dont want.
