I'm having trouble sorting something out. With acid-loving plants, they need a lower PH to be able to extract nutrients from the soil. If they are getting all of their nutrients from a fertilizer (as in a 100% turface application), do they still need a low PH soil?

Yes, they still need acid but with grit soil you have to either add some conifer bark for the acid, or feed with something like MirAcid (or both).

I guess I'm just unclear as to why they still need the soil PH to be lower.
