I don't think so. It looks like they are sitting on black plastic sheeting or something, and there are sprinkler heads throughout.

Oh my god, this so reminds me of something.
So, at the Cleveland Bonsai show last weekend I had a lady pull me aside to tell me that while the trees in the show were nice they weren't "real bonsai" because she liked her bonsai with big hips and skinny arms. I'm guessing she meant these things. I politely listened to her screed but Smoke would have been mortified. lol
