It is more to hold soil in.
That makes sense.

I have a serissa 'forest' grouping I bought on ebay and he sent it planted in pure dirt which is how he'd had it growing for 9 years. For some reason though it dries out constantly and is a very thirsty group of trees. I don't fill my pots to the brim but that pot definitely needs to be topped with some bonsai soil to keep dirt from spilling over. Thanks for the tip.
