Hello, i´m developing a triple trunk deshojo. It comes from an air layer (1 year and a half since i cut it). My goal now is to let it grow to thicken the trunks, but
i had to cut one of the trunks because i see it had some black parts along this trunk. Now i need it to back bud from this trunk to continue developing it.
Do you think this trunk will die if it does not sprout this season? The tree is now in full leaf.
Should i cut the othe trunk short (red line) to forze it to bud from the lower part of the tree?

Any advice is welcome.

Firstly, I don't think that growing maples in colanders is good.

It's OK for conifers, but I don't think it's suitable for Japanese maples.

Secondly, I think that the soil mix is mainly un-organic : I don't think this is good for maples to grow, they need organic soil, lots of natural feed to thrive, then, the roots can be trimmed.

A maple is not a pine ;)

thanks for your advices. I plan to put it in a big grow box next year to thicken the trunks.

Hi,
Your maple is not big enough to do any trunk chops, plus Deshojo is not a mega strong grower. In other words, not enough trunks growth(girth) and branches to chop and get a good response.

I would leave the left trunk alone, apart from trimming the other branches. Sorry to say but in 2-3 years this should be ready for a chop and start again.

Hi buddy, I'm glad to see you here!

You know what I think: this year I would let it grow and in 2021 hard pruning!

Inorganic soil is not a threat if you feed it and water heavily and constantly.

Cheers

I would def. wait to cut it back until it has recovered. I think the small blackish trunk may die completely back, so you'll need options. Feed feed feed...

I don't like the look of the black crotch.

If that's not moss black slime....

It is probly black death.

What is it?

Hi sorce, in the pic it looks a bit black, but in real its a bit brown. I think its just a bit of mud (that part was covered until a few weeks)
The tree is now in full leaf, except the cuted trunk.

Thanks for your comment!
