Air layer leaves dying

I have done an air layer of an acer and there are roots appearing in the ball around the layer. However most of he leaves on this branch are shriveled and look dead but the roots are growing. Has this failed or might it survive ? I haven’t separated it yet .

It’s a pretty thin branch I tried it on.

I would separate it now. Here, it's still time to make (late) cuttings. If the branch is thin and has a few roots, I think that it's like a cutting that has begun to produce roots, so if you put it in a good mix, I think the chances it will survive are quite good.
