Air layer to root over rock

I love air layering. Amazing to me that you can pick a spot on a tree that you like and create a new tree off of it. For me air layers seem like a top way to start good deciduous material and have a head start.

Anyone tried an air layer directly on to a rock? I’m trying a few lately and will document how they go here. Here are a few pics of one I did today.

Rock is pretty small. You will have to keep that maple really small or it will quickly take over the rock. It is a good idea however.

Anyone used Seiryu stone for root over rock? I’ve been trying to locate some bigger and dark colored stone.
