I have recently tried my hand at air layering on an unwanted branch of a crabapple tree in my front yard. I tried to only remove the bark and the cambium but kept cutting to deep and a layer of sapwood came off when I peeled the bark. Is this going to doom my air layer? Any help would be much appreciated.

That should be fine. You need to go beyond the cambium layer and interrupt the sapwood (phloem) layer all the way around the tree to get the portion above it to produce roots.

Thanks for your help. Do you use rooting hormone for air layering?
