Air layering Ponderosa

I've got a collected ponderosa with a large bulge near the top from a previous scar. I was hoping to air layer off the top just below the bulge as it would make for a nice trunk. I was wondering if anyone had success doing this with ponderosas and also about how long it took for roots to develop. I'm using spaghnum moss as the medium with some powdered root hormone.
