How early can we start air layering trees? Specifically zone 7b? Its getting pretty warm but there will still be some low numbers at night time. Should we wait until the lows are above 50 or more? Or can you go ahead and start some? I had been planning on waiting until march. But if I can start some now I would.. Also, does it depend on the species as well? I could have googled this but I'd like to hear from experience. Thanks.

Typically, air layers can be performed 1) as the buds begin to swell, and 2) after the spring growth has hardened off- I've done it successfully both times with maples. I have a few landscape and potted Acer palmatums that will have layers applied to them both in the next few weeks as the buds start to move, and again, on different trunks, after the new leaves have hardened off. It's gonna be a fun spring:).

Species in question, would be crepe myrtles, Japanese maples, and possibly hornbeam and azalea. Buds are def swelling on some trees right now where I'm at.

Where you at it NC I'm in Raleigh I haven't seen any buds swelling yet. Was warm last week this week will put the breaks on things again. Early spring for air layering after leaves are out.

I'm from statesville.. Its about 45 minutes north of Charlotte. (My profile says eastern nc but I just realized it actually western) lol my trident maple buds are swelling and the dogwoods are swelling. And one of my crepe myrtles actually popped a new bud. All my deciduous trees are in the garage right now, it was 19 degrees this morning.

As roots are formed based on hormones that the foliage sent down ('Hey, I am active, you should be growing too!'), I wait untill the first flush of leaves is out. My maples have started to break bud this week. If this weather holds, I expect to be putting on airlayers mid-March. Especially since it looks like we might get a long growing season, there is no harm in waiting untill the leaves are out, I'd say.

What club do you attend (if any)? I'm quite local to you and I go to Carolina bonsai.

Statesville is not to far from Charlotte. Here is an excellent organization for you to join. http://www.bonsaicarolina.org/ The Bonsai Society of the Carolinas. They can help you make contacts up your way as well. Good Luck.
