Hey all, so I recently moved into a new home and there is this juniper in the backyard. The previous owners kept pruning the bottom to create a top bulb. I have plans on re-doing the garden and this tree will be one that I remove.

As I have recently become quite addicted to learning about all things bonsai I thought I could salvage this tree and attempt to air layer it as an experiment and possibly creating my own bonsai material.

I thought abut air layering it at the red line. Do any of you have any suggestions for position to air layer or time of year to do this?

Thanks everyone! Excited to join the community.

I'm surprised nobody answered.

All junipers do respond to air layering. The older the wood at the point air layered, the longer it takes for the air layer to take. If you put your air layer on in spring, you might have enough roots by September. But if you don't have enough roots, just leave the air layer in place over winter and it should root by end of the second summer.

In all likelihood you will have roots by the end of the first summer.

Oh wow, thank you for the reply! I had given up on this post haha. That sounds like a great plan. Do you have any recommendation of what time in spring to put on the air layer?

Also do you think the spot I marked is a good point to put on the air layer?

Thanks!
