At our study group last Sunday, one of the members brought one of these:

http://www.canby.com/benwalker/SuperiorContainers.htm

He was using just the sidewall material for an air/ground layer, but says he uses the fully system as well. Looks like a pretty slick system, and for a reasonable price. One nice feature is that you can just unwind the sidewall when it is time to remove the container from the tree.

For east coast members, here is another distributor:

And here is the manufacturers site:

Looks like the same thing as Vance Wood's pots or pond baskets, nothing really new in the purpose, just in the shape. I have doubts about that wide open bottom.

Yes, not really anything new, but it does open up new sizes (any pond basket over about 5 gallons I've found it really too weak to fill with soil and then move). And while Vance's planters are very attractive, this one would be more cost effective for a large operation.

The one I saw in person didn't have such an open bottom, it was a disk with a series of slits. That open bottom would certainly need some screen/mesh/hardware cloth for our use. But that may only be for the huge sizes, I don't know.

The guy also metioned that he buys an extra bottom, and cuts the side in half, getting two containers for a little extra cost. For example, the 5 gallon size is 12" diameter, 12" high, so he ends up with two, 2.5 gallon pots of 12" diameter, 6" high.

Good points about the size factor and it looks price efficient as well.

These pots are very cool looking...

I would like to play with one and see how durable it is. I think I just may order one next week.

A scrap of screen to cover the bottom section and I think these would make an awsome cascade training pot.
