I got a nursery stock amelanchier two weeks ago and since I had to cut it down anyway I took some of the longer cuttings, slapped some rooting hormone on them, and stuck them in the ground. I later read that amelanchiers are difficult to root from hardwood.

The branches were budded and now the buds are opening. What is an indicator that the cuttings actually rooted? Are the buds opening enough of an indication or is there some other sign?

This is my first time trying cuttings so I have no idea.
