I purchased this Amur last spring from Ray's Nursery in Orono. I split potted it into a pond basket and planted it in a raised bed. Now knowing how vigorous this species is, I wish I would have did root work on it, but my thinking was just, trunk, trunk, trunk and I've now moved to the rootwork, trunk, rootwork, trunk camp, maybe a little slower in the progression but your not left with a mess and in the case of this species, may not be able to be fixed after, as they grow such thick roots so rapidly. However, luckily, this trees roots wern't as much as a mess as the my other one (though the other one, is quite a bit older). I know Nigel had bought one from the same lot and he didn't fare as well :

Unfortunately, a rabbit chewed a bunch of park off some of the root base, It's healed slightly but I'm probably stuck with it. I'd like to say it can add some character but personally, I think it's just ugly, maybe later on I can try carving it or something.

I combed the roots out and removed most of the really big roots but still left a lot. I'm probably being way to conservative, but I'm new to this and don't want to take a chance in killing the tree.

Even with the some dead Nebari, I'm pretty happy with it. I think I'm going to work towards a winter silhouette, windswept design, to accent the directional growth of the roots and the deadwood thats frequent with this species. However just wiring the two small branches, I can see how difficult this style is to create something that's convincing.

Anyways, after a few weeks in the garage, it's going back in the grow bed (this year, with a fence to keep the damn rabbits out).

(As per usual, constructive criticism is much appreciated, as I need all your expertise to get better!)
