This Amur maple was acquired this July. I bought it off another kindred spirit close to by , around same age, cool dude. It’s in a colander on the ground. I’m thickening the base up more, but it has some nice side branches developing. It likes the morning to afternoon sun.

Mannnn colanders are a pain to cut out. Sifted Akadama , pumice , Lava combo.. cut a lot of the roots back on this one to closer roots , and cut out downward facing / overlapping roots. Tied onto a wooden board to promote radial roots and widening base. Cut into one side to sprout new roots. I didn’t have quite a grow box to use for this one, but I think the grow pot will do it’s job for a few seasons.. planted a bit lower to grow those roots/ radial nebari. Had to mist the roots a lot I tried a few other options before going w this pot. I can’t grow in ground because how watery/ clay my soil is. Maybe future use grow bed if not a lot of progress is seen over next few seasons.

Nice !
i have a small one 5 years now but i cant get it to grow strong.
At spring it starts exploding with growth then it stalls and every year it seems to get some kind of fungal disease on the leaves

Thanks … it still has a long way to go .. eventually it will go into grow box I just didn’t have that ready.. so the grow pot was next best thing. I’m interested to see how the wood block underneath will promote radial roots / thicker base.

Nice Amur. Looks like you’ve got some good bones there. I love this species, they seem to be pretty bulletproof.

This is a sweet tree, I am becoming obsessed with amurs. I collected a few this year and they are coming back strong. This looks like a really happy one. Do you have a future goal for it or just letting it do its thing?

In earlier posts I did stuff to develop it .. so it gets a better nebari and radial surface roots and getting it tall to thicken the base while keeping bottom branches in tact for future .
