No, not a songtitle of Tom Petty & Heartbreakers.

More likely a Prunus Serotina.

I collected this paticular species because of the nice blossom-risps in spring.
Hopefully I will be able to show you some of these next year.
Prunus Serotina is a so called neophyt to a german (european) habitat.
The origin of this species is North America.
Because of her vigour of vegetation and the strong urge to gain for light,
P. Serotina had managed to suppress P. Padus, the original inhabitant.

The tree is almost as high as wide as deep.
Well, a lot of carving-work to do ...
And again ugly and rediculous at that stage. We will see ...

I cannot tell you how many of those trees I have killed, has to be several hundred. Almost everyone of them had heart rot near the base. In the Chicago area they also are infested with carpenter ants that chew them up.

I would recommend that you seal those cuts to prevent the rot.

AlainK : Sorry Alain. Assistants ... ? escape what from ... ? o_O

CasAH: Well, this sound a bit alarming to me. heart rot ...
In fact there are not many Serotina-bonsais out there.
I am not familiar to that particular species.
I hope the fate of this tree will be not that sad ...

I have two in my collection. I have had june bug larvae eating my roots, and ongoing problems with cherry leaf curl, but no heartwood problems yet. That's a big specimin, though, so it is possible. I would agree on sealing the wounds well.

Have you sheared it back yet this year @Arnold_K ? I love Prunus - such craggy dark bark. This tree is no exception - a lovely piece of material.
