The tree has decided on an apex. So now it’s time todo the careful cut - no more than 45 degrees with clean edges. The leader that will form the apex should be at the top of the cut, but don’t cut into the neck. Cut as close as possible by saw and then work the cut down bit by bit with knob cutters.

Big branches can be guy wired down. I wired the branches first and then drilled a hole in the box where I wanted to pass the guy wire. Then I passed the guy wire through the wire on the branches and through the hole on the box to apply the tension.

Unless you have 6’ or so of bench space, you’ll need to bend the branches up at the ends. That means wiring out pretty far on branches you don’t mean to keep. Movement here is not important - were just keeping the first couple of inches. I have loads of vertical space, but limited horizontal space and these shoots need to grow long.

It looks like rule #2 is bring a guard dog!

Also, with tridents do you see any difference in growth response when digging/repotting before bud swell and during bud swell?

Sorry Hemmy. Missed your question somehow. I do not see a difference in my climate. I collect or repot anytime from January until after bud break. My winters are so mild though. Don’t know if trees are ever truly dormant here.

@markyscott how do you find they do here in the heat and sun? i have a couple and I do not let them get full mid day sun. They do seem to handle the sun/heat here better than jap maples.
