Thought this was some kind of birch but now not so sure. Haven’t seen it get anything but leaves meaning no flowers and thus no fruit. Any ideas? Bought this from a gentleman a year or so ago that had forgotten about it in his garden, was already potted in a nursery pot. He thinks he had collected it here in southern Oregon somewhere.

Alternating leaf pattern. Thought the leaves would change more color but this is about it then tgey

These are the most mature leaves still on the tree

Good tree regardless but that one surface root … I assume you have plans to address it in the future?

Zat appears to be a Hackberry my frend

I was wondering that, but didn't want to sway any opinions. Thank you.

Yes, it needs to go. I could do some light shari on it to get the tree to start rejecting it or I could just remove it. I believe the tree has a good base of fine roots established already. Probably wait until 2023 to do though. Could carve it a little next spring. Any suggestions?

I should add, apex needs a little help as well.

Looks like the northern hackberry "Celtis occidentalis". Google image search: Min hsuan Lo Chinese Hackberry bonsai, if you want some masterpiece hackberry inspiration with jaw-dropping ramification.
