I would love to have that little tree on my bench, but what’s up with the leaves?
Lol!!! It’s not an apple. It’s an Ume. Japanese flowering apricot. And that fruit is an apricot.

The leaves? They’re curled up. Which is what Ume do in the summer. A mature Ume that produces flowers will have rough leaves, and they’ll curl up. Yes, they look like they’re all dried up, but they’re not.

That’s just “what they do”. A “good Ume” ( one that’s going to flower) looks awful in the summer. It’s the price we have to pay for the beautiful flowers in the winter.

This year, however, this one produced a little fruit!

I learn something new everyday. I can’t say I care for the leaf situation but I do love the tree.

The leaves are what they are. That’s Ume.

If they curl, the tree will bloom. If not, it won’t.

That’s the thing... most of the year, they’re plain, if not down right ugly. But those two weeks of the year when they’re in bloom... there’s nothing better!

This one got hedged… err um... cut back hard yesterday, though I left the cascading branch and the developing new Apex alone to gain strength. It’s going to get a bucket full of organic feed placed on the soil surface today… Hoping for one more push of new growth before fall.

The wrist still aches but it’s stronger every day, so I doused myself in deep woods off and continued working the existing deadwood and creating some new Shari. Unfortunately, I broke the burr I use most frequently for finer carving and will have to improvise until it gets replaced. Hopefully, more work tomorrow.

Nice work with the weak hand!
Taking care of Bonsai one handed is more difficult than most imagine.
I had surgery on my right arm Tuesday.
Watering is now a serious chore! Luckily it’s rained all weekend.

No worries… I’m pretty sure I’m the one who did the hijacking😬. Anyway, I’ll hopefully have this cast off within the month and will be able to throw another round of wiring at the ume this year... it’s growing gangbusters right now 😎.
Playing with my first ume plant ( Kobai ) this summer. I think it is outpacing the wisteria! It hit the shade cloth above and turned down then back up again. I am thinking nice curves for cuttings.I have noticed the young growth bruises from wiring pretty easily! Are you wrapping the wire, using bigger diameter aluminum? Or just not worrying about it as it will mature with age.

I wire Ume like any other deciduous tree and simply use the gauge of wire needed to do the job without any wraps. Also, I can't say I've noticed the young growth is any more likely to be damaged by wire. I have noticed the new growth, and particularly that of the first flush, tends to lignify quickly, and the wire only needs to be on for around 4 weeks.

Thanks Dave, i was surprised by the speed with which the wire began to cut in. Early wireing is going to be needed much like the Chojubai.

Touched up the live wood carving I did yesterday, going a little bit deeper into the trunk… This will look good after the newly carved wood has aged a bit. Applied cut paste to the edge of the live park to prevent die back. I’ll probably work it more this fall after leaf drop.
