Colllected from someone’s back yard, two weeks ago. It was much larger and growing very very wild. Not really sure what to do with it at this point other then let it adjust and see where buds form. Should I cut and more of the straight portions or any of the other portions that appear to be fully dead? It’s approximately three and a half feet wide roughly. Thanks for any advice.

With most fresh collected plants it is best to just leave them totally alone until you get good growth indicating plenty of strong new roots. That could take a year or more. No hurry to do more chopping or remove anything. Even chopping more fully dead will move the plant in the pot so potential injury to any new roots. Extra bits rarely stop a tree from transplant but playing can.

It would be an accomplishment to be proud of if you can kill one of these things.

What's your plan for the first one? I don't see anything there worth the effort to bonsai.

Personally I feel that if we aren’t trying to bonsai every plant that comes across our paths are we really learning everything we can. The first one is a big basket of mess. But it has so many twists and turns and wraps that I just couldn’t pass it up. Even if it ends up just being an overgrown bush of bloom I’ll be happy. But realistically, once I can tell what is actually alive then I can remove the unneeded messy branches. Try to just go with it and trim and wire as I go. Maybe eventually it will be something presentable.

You already chopped off all the leafy growth on the first one. Why not cut off everything you don't want?
