Hey heres an update on my little seedling. I have removed the wires as the trunk is thickening so quick they were cutting in. Hard to believe this only poked its head out of the ground 8 months ago.
Do you have no idea how you came by the seeds?
A stab in the dark would be Hazel.

The seeds were in a cheap grow your own kit I was gifted. The packaging gave no indication as to what seeds were supplied and online searches proved fruitless.

I have up to now thought it was Alder, but it does also look a bit Hazel like. One day I may get a true identification, but for now at least it’s growing.

Still think it’s alder though, looking at the leaves. Not sure what these purple bud things are

Those purple bud things are the key to it's identity. Keep taking photos as those buds open. This is not alder and not an elm. It is some species, most likely native to China. Look at a Flora of China, or Trees of China.
I think the buds may be the beginnings of the female catkins on an Alder.

As we move into Autumn here in the UK, my little seedling is losing its leaves and now looks like this.

The purple buds in the last picture have lasted through winter and are now opening to reveal new leaves.

I'm thinking OL.. (Original Leo) was onto something.. especially since those buds opened to leaves...

Have you looked into Hibiscus?.. the leaves are looking the part SLIGHTLY.

But I said that about "Alder-y", too.

I will take some more pictures tomorrow in the daylight, see if it reveals it’s true identity, but I quite like the mystery of not knowing what it is.
