Who knew that this magnificent oak was slumbering in downtown Jacksonville all this time. The name "Treaty Oak" is a based on an untrue story told by a 19th century writer. He stated that the Indians and English signed a treaty underneath its branches. Not sure as to the why he embellished this. Enjoy.

More photos. Also this tree is thought to be 200-300 years old.

Yea, When I was looking at it, I don't know how the limbs are supported. They are absolutely massive! Some are almost the size of the trunk. It may have reverse taper, but it does have that intangible that only nature can provide.

Most of the real massive ones have branches that touch down or rest on the ground before taking off again. Part of the Oak adaptive traits I guess. :)

That looks like an awesome tree house. :p

The weight of those huge, long branches weighs them to the ground, which helps support them. That's typical of old southern live oaks. And, of course, the wood is heavy and strong so it can bear quite a bit of weight.

 that is unbelievably AWESOME! Thanks for sharing...I can't imagine standing before it...and totally taking in the history of the years it's stood standing gracefully.

Here in the Beaufort area, those live oaks with branches touching the ground are referred to as "angel oaks". They gracefully touch down with their '"wings".

The lowcountry is a live oak haven.

I have one near my house that was one of the biggest I had seen for awhile until the top half or so was knocked off by lightning or something. If it weren't raining I'd go get a picture for you. Savannah is loaded with beautiful trees like this as well. They bring you back to a time long passed.

There is one Live Oak known as the Angel Oak. Its owned by the city of Charleston I believe, but its pretty far removed. Its set off in its own li'l park on one of the islands (that starts with a J, John/James/...)

Its one of the most massive trees I've ever beheld. It has as much "presence" (whatever that is) as Yosemite's giants.

If you're not familiar, you owe it to yourself to find it and spend some time there seeing as you're that close. (Some of its trunks are almost submerged!)
