Always good to see signs of recovery after transplant but I never count chickens. No tree has survived transplant until it has grown for a full season after collection. Many will use stored resources to grow new shoots but without roots that growth tends to be short lived.
Apples are among the easiest to transplant so I have no doubt this one will be OK. Just be aware of potential disappointment.

I see a change of bark color and slight swelling down low. Possible graft? There is also a bit of damage down there which you may be able to use in a design or you may elect to layer the trunk above that area at some stage when it has recovered and is growing strong again.

Somehow I ended up with two different threads???

Anyway. Time will tell. It has a better chance than it did in the compost bin.

Seal the cut at the apex. Fruit trees really susceptible to fungus and possible blight.......introduce some fert options, but be easy with watering this big container....keep an eye on new growth for bugs, apples and crabs are magnets....LOOOOONG term project. Enjoy!

Do you know what variety of apple it is? I've done the same thing this year, back budding like crazy

Grafted yes, but also quite tall.

I like the idea earlier of layering. Then, layer the op just above the small branch halfway up the trunk and keep both. Two trees!

Its really only about 10". But maybe an air layer down the road. I think for this year this tree has had about all it can handle. I do like the idea of a shohin apple especially with the gnarly old graft scar.

Still strong. The smaller two are root cuttings I stuck in soil in spring. They came from the graft stock of this same tree. The squirells naturaly pruned the smallest but it seems just as happy. Either apples are very hardy or I nailed the timing for this cut back. Probably a little of both. Anyhow this has been a very rewarding process so far.

More of the first I think but success builds confidence which in turn develops skill and technique.
Well done with all these.

Yeah I'm definitely giving the tree most of the credit. ;)
