This tree was seperated this past august, turned out nice, radial roots, 1"1/2 base, debating on chopping in spring, our growing out and taking another layer, the last pic is of the parent plant which started new growth a inch below chop, I'm going to leave it in the ground to grow out, hard to tell from pics, but it has a really nice base.

Nice trunk movement. I've recently started considering wide scale air layering of the many maple cultivars I have as a means of generating future bonsai material, so I completely understand the difficulty in deciding how to proceed next spring. If this was MY tree, however, I'd probably chop to get this one moving more quickly down the road to a bonsai...unless the trunk above was REALLY worth saving!

By the way, are the pots buried in the ground for winter protection, or for growing out?

I will probalbly chop Dave, and the pots are buried for the escape method of growing, they are the pots with all the slits.

Hopefully the donor plant will take off, it has a nice looking trunk.

Thanks, I hope, it started pushing some growth after the airlayer, hopefully things will pick up in spring

I'm trying to grow my own stock to sustain my hobby and aquire material with nice bases without scaring, and decent nebari, without the heavy price tags, hopefully in five more years ill be good to go, this tree had a 1/2" trunk when planted three yrs ago, they seem to grow faster then the species in my yard soil for some reason.
