I've heard it's difficult and an uncommon occurrence. I can see why, logistically. But is there anyway to promote bud formation by maybe exfoliating some of the bark and allowing light to touch where one removed the bark? Also, does anyone have any experience with bud or approach grafting on Arakawa?I'd like to know if it's feasible.

Arakawa what????

Pine, maple, elm

JM cork bark cultivar....lol.......and I'm glad someone with some experience answered my thread...I've seen your sumo tridents..Very nice!!!

If you chop an arakawa back enough it will backbud. Always leave some green though. I wouldn't be chopping right now though.

Its all going to depend on the age of the species. Pine is worst.

maple second worst.

And arakawa elm is so easy to get buds it is silly.

For a maple it will depend on branches and how well developed they are. If they are well developed and serious cutting back is not an option then grafting is the safest approach. Corking on a maple is not that deep as elm and pine and grafting should be fairly safe with someone with experience grafting.

Pretty late now.

Here is an Arakawa Elm I am working on. Before as dug and 6 months later.

I know not to chop this late into the season, but the tree I have in mind is only green on the sacrifice growing near the base and the apex of the actual trunk...it has NO branches, save for the sacrifice, for 2/3 of the way up.....chopping back would leave me with all bark..I was just wondering if it is safe to do this with a cork bark variety..I've had good results with JM in the past in regards to back budding(actually all maples), but I don't know if a chop next spring all the way to old wood would endanger the tree....
