At least she can't be upset about me spending more money on trees :-)

So I am trying not to buy any more trees as everything I have is just material and I am a noob to this. Problem is whenever I see a new beautiful tree I want to pick up additional species and try them as well.

I happened to be driving past a local nursery and stopped in just to see if they had any hornbeams and how much they were. While there we got to talking about what I wanted it for and I was told we have a bunch of free stuff over there if you want to play with any of that... Yes please!

As a result two red oaks one with an interesting base( previously I had never considered an oak but saw a few recently so I am more than willing to try) Allegheny Service berry with a very cool base, a ginko and a tree to be named later... No tag and no leaves. The owner said it could possibly be a hornbeam but he wasn't sure. If it is I'll be that much more excited!

Last three are of the tree without a name. Smooth grey trunk, tons of buds. Any thoughts or ideas would be great.

I'll likely throw most of these in the ground and try to figure out the best time to chop the trunks. My wife will likely still scratch her head and say we have more trees ? At least I can tell her they only cost me a conversation 😁🤷🤗

That's what I'm thinking as well. Guess I will have to wait for spring and some leaves to he able to tell for sure. I still may go back and grab a hornbeam they had as it looked like it had promise but getting one for free would definitely be nice. :)

The mystery trees’ buds do look a lot like my hornbeam.
They do look like the pictures I've seen for hornbeam. Also very similar to beech. I would be happy with either but I would prefer a hornbeam if I had a choice. 😜

You will like the Amelanchier, Serviceberry, the bark is smooth, much like hornbeam or beech, but with the added benefit of lovely white flowers opening just before leafing out.

Serviceberry are slow to trunk up. It is difficult to find, or get sizes much over 3 inches diameter. If you have a trunk over 1.5 inches, you might as well get to work with what you got. They make a nice slender, graceful tree, or a smaller shohin.

I like to look at my own plot, planted with trees and shrubs. But this love of mine probably went too far when I started to realize that I was spending too much money on some plants or tree seedlings that didn't really fit into my budget.
I have some land but no trees that I would be willing to cut or dig, my uncle does has some land but I have struggled to find good trees for bonsai there.

I would like to add a few more words.

That I still can't just go home after work without stopping by the plant store. And so I decided to share my experience with you because I decided it was time to stop spending so much, and I thought about how to write out my entire budget and see how much I can spend on specific plants. But for some reason, it was difficult for me to make my own decision. So I created a topic in a form where one of the comments adds a link to the site https://wealthtender.com/insights/money-management/what-is-a-financial-coach/ where the topic of financial literacy was described in detail, which I read, and also talked to a financial coach who helped me write out my entire budget.
I'm all about financial literacy and living in moderation but is this for real? Looks like spam. I found Dave Ramsey a few years ago and it changed out lives, I have since moved on from Dave but listening to him for some time changed how we interact with money and changed out lives.

This madness never ends guys. You stop buying trees and you start buying pots for the trees you have.
We had a good long discussion here this morning about me dropping $170 on two pots, what, for a donation. My sanity was somewhat in question. I skated on that one, someone outbid me at the last, but she still has some questions pertaining to my cognitive reasoning.
