Rather than hijacking Kai's thread here is the Azalea I was talking about. It was blown off the benches last fall and broke 2 branches, one being part of the main branch. As this leaves a fairly serious gap in the branch structure I am thinking about cutting everything back hard to try and get the broken branch to bud out (it still scratches green). If that doesn't work out at least I should get some good budding to rebuild the branch.

Hey Ian... I would say go for it...if the branch is still green a heavy pruning might just fool the tree into budding on that branch. I am afraid if you wait till next spring the branch may no longer be alive to bud.
