So I just got an Azalea and did some research. It is best to use rainwater for watering but the problem is where I live, Northern California, we havent had rain in forever and its been warm out currently. So ive been just watering my tree with water from the tap and im pretty sure it has lime and the water in my area is hard. So, what can I do?? Can I use filtrated drinking water or Reverse Osmosis water?? Or use water dechlorinator for aquariums? Give me your opinion on what I should do. Thanks!!

Yes hard water can cause chlorinosis ? (sp) in azaleas, makes the leaves turn sort of yellow and they do not flourish. I do not think it will kill the plant though. You could buy bottled water but that would really add up after some time. I remember letting chlorinated water set out in an open bucket for 24 hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate but you are talking about hard water so I assume you mean minerals like lime and magnesium which are not good for azaleas. I wonder if you could get some lake water, a couple 5 gallon buckets would have to last for several weeks on one azalea, I would even water the plant over a bucket so you could catch the run-off. This may keep it going healthy until you get some rain that you could collect. I know too that some types of hard water can be softened by boiling while others can not, I can not remember what is the difference though. Could you make a call to your water plant and ask them, I bet they handle this question all the time. Good luck.

consider using Miracid. Rhodies in general are in the acid-loving camp. It may take care of the lime (alkaline) problem. Also, some add a touch of vinegar, but I dont know which and how much. Dont just dump some of that in your water without doing your due diligence.

YES, I have extremely hard well water, I fertilize with miracid, water from well, have not had any issues.

Use RO/DI water, or you could always buy distilled water in 5 gallon amounts from the store

Otherwise use a lot of peat in your soil, and fertilize with miracid.
