Sealing roots cuts is not a great thing to do. If the tree is properly watered post-collection those cuts are not in danger of drying out. The cut ends are the location of the strongest root regeneration. Slopping putty or sealer over the edges of those cuts will slow down or even prevent new roots from forming there. The thin layer of tissue sandwiched between the out bark and inner wood of the root, much like the cambium in the tree's upper growth, is where new roots will sprout.

I said that because this was a large trunk with a flat cut across the bottom that must have been 4-5” long by about 2” across. That was a large area to leave exposed.
