I am new to bonsai. A couple of weeks ago I attended the Lonestar Bonsai Federation's convention and this was a project tree from there.

So now I am interested in potting it. Specifically, I am spooked as to how to approach these roots...

Can anyone advise me on how to proceed with this? Any other relevant advice is welcome.

Well i can't tell if the soil is covering up anything good, but personally from what i can see i would ground layer it and forget about the roots you have. However only you can determine that when you get a peek of what lies under the soil line and if it apeals to you keep it.
