That culd end up a nice tree. I'd cut that aerial root right at the trunk and let it sprout into a second tree.

Its odd that there is hardly any growth in that time frame (1 year+) has it had a major setback or lots of work did on it in that time?

The tree was neglected and had poor growth when I bought it summer of '13. There was a profusion of growth in the spring '14, I removed much of it before the spring pics.

Growing well, starting to work on branch definition and selection. Reduced the deadwood. Carving and wiring this fall. Should make it into first training pot next spring.

Perhaps you should/could remove the weeds earlier so to get more growth instead of the weeds eating / drinking (and partying) everything
