Hi all,

New to bonsai. I had a juniper about 2 years ago that I accidentally killed due to neglect, but I'm much less busy now and so my wife and I purchased a bald cypress bonsai about 2 feet tall. Looks pretty young, but healthy.

I'll include pics once I get home, but I'm not sure what to do with it to start. Foliage is pretty sparse, like it's not thick, so my guess is to just let it grow out for a year with regular watering and fertilizing. And prune and shape it next spring?

Should I regularly trim it in any way?

Since this is technically my first I'm interested in a formal upright style. I've seen other formal upright styles and the base of the trunk is so thick. How do I get it like that?

Any fertilizer recs?

Sorry if this post is all over the place, I'm just excited and have many questions?

Welcome to the NutHouse.
Being in FL, your BC should do well. I have 2 here in MD.
This year I'm keeping one in a tub of water, flooded at all times, as it would be in a swamp in a bayou. I'm trying one out of the tub too, but its a very big pot, both are doing well.

If the trunk thickness is not to your desired size, definitely it grow out.

Keep it very well watered if you're not flooding a tub.

I use 20-20-20 N-P-K water soluble fertilizer. Sometimes the fish emulsion too.

Good luck!

Get some pics posted!
