Wondering if anybody has had success with maintaining a Cypress in the desert... Or is it just a bad idea.
Thanks

I would imagine you just need to keep it well watered. They only take a light dormancy. Try Montezuma Cypress.

I'm in albuquerque new mexico and I have a couple, they seem to do well with shade from miday sun and some winfmd protection. I leave mine in standing water during the growing season then in fall I water like a normal tree, just a little more often lol. You don't want the tree to be in standing water if there's a freeze danger, frozen roots are definitely not good.
EDIT: I just noticed you live in tucson, I doubt you need to worry about the water freezing, we get a but more cold here I'm in zone 7b.

Nice! Thanks all... was worried about having to mist the leaves and bark a million times a day during the summer.
Think ill give it a shot....
Good to hear they do well in shade for part of the day @aml1014 .... Think I have the prefect spot for it in the yard.

Okay.... so I bit the bullet and bought my first Cypress. Not getting till next week but getting everything organized in anticipation of its arrival (OCD much?)
Anyway... I need to plant in a tub for a few seasons to get things going but was wondering would it be a good idea to plant on top of a tile in order to keep the roots lateral?

The tree has landed!
Very excited about it.... replanted today and now deciding what to do with it!
We shall see how it fairs in my 9 gallon swamp.
Thinking of taking the top down to the first branch in the front and use it as a leader.....or perhaps lower?
Any ideas, thoughts, or criticisms? All and any are welcome!!!!
Sorry about the pics... should have draped something behind the tree!

I personally like taller bald cypress, all to often you see people style them as these short fat trees which is not how they grow in nature at all.

I agree... going to bring down a bit. At the moment its at 37". Figure take off to that leader and hopefully should still be a good height.

You need to put a hat on them because they're "Bald"
Bhhahahahaha!
Well... that still leave me with the question.... what kind of hat?

The sophisticated?

They would probably do fine getting 2 hours of morning sun, shade the rest of the day throughout the growing season. Your set up will raise the relative humidity around the tree, just don't let it cook by letting the water get 'warm' - should be fine. The dappled lighting it's in should help too.
I'm not in NM, but my yard gets hot and dry. I have two that grow in complete shade, although they are growing slow. I have one that gets morning sun, then shade for the rest of the day. it's growing great in modern substrate, not standing water.
