i plan to cut a cypress of mine down from 5' to about 2.5' and want to save and grow the top. where i'm chopping is about 1 1/8'' in diameter. would i be significantly better off air-layering this, or are my chances of it rooting as a cutting pretty good? and if just cutting is fine, when is the best time of year? i read conflicting reports but my guess is late winter.

Layering would probably be better. In early spring. Cuttings are do-able, but mostly smaller (1/4 inch) ones; there's no guarantee that a larger one would take. In fact, I'd guess less than a 20% chance of them striking roots. If you do a cutting, early spring, rather than late winter.

out of curiosity ... are you only interested in keeping the top? or are you hoping for a two-fer ?
