Couple of barberry with nice color. The tall one will get ground layered next spring to make a short tree

I found one growing wild.
A bird must have eaten a viable seed and it came out in the woods.
I'm letting it grow larger before I collect it.
I had a couple small ones.
They're pretty tough plants.
But those needles!
Some of the sharpest thorns I've ever dealt with.

The tall one looks good.
What is the matter with it that we dont see?
Does it seem like they are hard to get to ramify to you?

The tall one will look better layered about an inch from the bottom. The proportions will be more natural. Yes the thunbergii is difficult to ramify. I think one of our Aussie members has a pretty nice one.

PS. The thorns are a bitch. Some people cut them off.

Nice work, too bad that color doesn't stick around longer.

Yeah thats the way they tend to grow mostly
I found a single trunk after a year looking for one in nursery's still a small one but i got time :)
I look in people's yards for big overgrown ones. If I ever see a big single trunker I'm asking if they would like a nicer shrub.
