Looks like a start to a nice little tree. I don't have any barberry, so can't help you much, but I would let it grow a bit and see where the tree takes you for styling ideas.

Did you cut it back ? If you did it was late in the year to do so. Don't do anything until it grows out a lot more. Nice trunk.
