Simple question but I did not find much information available, approximately how many years does it take for a Japanese maple to mature the bark?

5, 10, 20 years? ...

This bark from my tree is 7 years old. the base of the trunk has the more mature bark starting to spread upwards.

Just as an FYI: there is a thread here somewhere showing someone using sanding paper to lightly damage the bark in fall. By next summer the damaged areas were mature grey.

Thanks leatherback! I'm a fan of optimization, but the sandpaper method doesn't really convince me.

I have some JM projects in process, now I have a more approximate idea as to what to expect with the maturation times.

Thanks to all for the help :)
