What do you consider a good starter tree?
I sometimes think about what kind of material would be a good alternative to the box store juniper cuttings for people just starting out. This tree was collected with this in mind and also for its potential for quick development into a small but passable tree form. Lots to play with in terms of branch selection and wiring, I think it could actually look like a tree fairly soon yet not a huge disaster should it perish. I call it yamadorish material , collected last fall from a gravely forest service road pullout. Left there it would only be a matter of time till its parked on and destroyed.
Do you agree, good stuff to start out with? I would like to have some appropriate material on hand to assist people to get started in the hobby. When I look at most of my trees I kind of shudder at the thought of a beginner taking over the care for them, all but this one, I think I'll try to collect more similar material.

My idea of good beginner's tree is something that will give lots of opportunity to be worked on and tough (can take abuse or some mistakes, pest resistant, etc.).

With that in mind, I lean towards; elm, boxwood, yaupon holly, and trident maple. Of course it is location dependent so the list will vary.

Honest, as you mentioned it is experimental it could honestly have good potential over time. Spend the first year watching it and understanding how to keep it alive and by all means experiment! :)

Well good information on this page for all we should keep these things in our mind while we taking interests in gardening.Testimonials

This is what I have been looking for. I need anything that will backbud well and is resilient to punishment (I am a newbie).
