Birch identification

It might not survive...but I was in a tiny house resort in upstate New York and I collected a couple of birch (I think). Could anyone help identifying?IMG-20200906-WA0009.jpeg
Really like the twisted trunk 🤞🤞

Looks more elm to me. Birch tend to have a more spear shape, but could be the pics too.

Could be Carpinus maybe as well? How about a better pic of leaf and buds.

I think it will survive a lot of my trees just drop their leaves and grow new ones after repotting. I do like the twisted trunk!
