It is a start. Look along the foliated stems for buds - you can cut back to a bud. Next spring just after the buds have cracked and you can discern needles, pick/pinch the end off. This will reduce the length of the new shoots and, more interestingly will induce side buds at the base of the shoot that will flush a little later in the season. Then, sometime after the summer solstice you can again cut back to a bud. These basics will allow you to build a canopy of your liking and maintain it.

Given a decade or so, these develop a really nice fat trunk. They are actually look quite nice as a landscape plant while you wait. Regardless, this one looks to me like it could be made into a nice little shohin with a few years of pinch&cut-to-a-bud, plus basic diligent potted plant care of course. :cool:
