Got this spruce yesterday. Wasn’t going to buy anything but I could not resist. Don’t know the species but I Loved the trunk and It cost me 10 euros. Now, I know nothing about spruce so I hope I can make something out of it.

I hope it's not Picea Glauca. It doesn't look like it very much, but it does give off that vibe.
Picea glauca are notorious for being stuck to fingers during christmas. But they're hard to train into a bonsai. Their branches don't droop naturally, which means they will have to be wired all year long.
I have 3 of those glauca, and we're in a love-hate relationship.

Oh well. I don’t know what it is. We’ll see.

I started working on the tree yesterday. Selecting branches, wiring andnremoving old needles. have not yet finished. Maybe later today.

Sure looks like a dwarf Alberta spruce (Picea Glauca, possibly var Albertina) to me.
Not all bad, IMHO.

Apparently it’s not the greatest bonsai material. Anyways, I just went through and styled the tree. I’m quite happy with the result. Also checked the roots and they seem to be ok. No need for repot so I will let the tree recover for one year and maybe repot in spring 2020.

Excuse the kid’s drawings on the black wall.

If you want, you could bend the trunks now. I found that even though people say they are hard to set, that leaving the wire on for a year does a pretty good job. Especially through winter. It is going to bite in, though.

I kind of like the trunks as they are. Only slightly bent the short one on the right.

I’m thinking about reducing the trunk numbers to 3 by removing the shortest one on the right. What you guys and gals think? I can compensate its loss with a side branch from the trunk next to it.

If you would give me the free choice, I would keep the outer right one and remove the one next to it.
That way you'll have three trees with some actual difference in age. If you keep the largest 3 trunks, I think it's a bit conservative. Maybe a bit boring even. It draws the eye exactly to the center. That's not wrong! But not my personal taste.

Kids drawings Great! Especially babe super hero:cool:. Dwarf Alberta Spruce is good tree for some folks. Beginning plus naturally short needles;).

Quick and surprising, at least for me, update.

My spruce is starting to bud, finally. I think it believes it’s still in Norway ;)

Anyways. It is backbudding in several places including the trunk. And I thought these were not supposed to.

This one died on me. I risk spruce off from my list. Not doing well in my climate

yeah but it never took off and slowly faded into oblivion. It was pretty much dead by mid summer.

good to know, i did an alberta spruce after seeing the herons bonsai video. always just thought of it as practice but i’ll temper my expectations further. didn’t realize the branches wouldn’t ever set low
