black, gray, white, red pine? what is the difference.

What is the difference between these. I thought at the beginning of my self teaching that needles bundles determined the difference in the color name? I.e. red pines have 2 needles. Can someone explain this to me? Very confusing to say the least. I have searched and could not find the answers I a looking for.

From my understanding all pines fall into one of three categories: Pinus, Strobus and Ducampopinus. I learned this from wikepedia... I'd suggest starting there and the studying pine books or essays on line if you want to go that deep into it.

Pick up a copy of "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" by Michael Dirr. Every bonsai grower should have one anyway, but the info you want is in there.

You don't need the most current edition (trees don't change that much) and older editions are available use for a reasonable price. Try www.abebooks.com .
