February 27 - 28, 2016. The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, CA

The Bonsai-A-Thon is the major fund raiser for the GSBF Collection at The Huntington. The Bonsai-A-Thon is held on the last weekend in the month of February. The event has been expanding since inception. Each year you can expect 20 vendors selling pots, finished bonsai, raw bonsai stock, tools, akadama, scoria, accessories, and suiseki (viewing stones). Each day you can expect four to five demonstrators. They are picked not only from Southern California, but from the state at large and when available nationally known demonstrators as well. The trees from these demonstrations are auctioned at the end of the day. Along with the auction a large benefit drawing is held daily.

We invite everyone – bonsai novices, enthusiasts and experts – to our annual fundraising event on behalf of the Golden State Bonsai Federation Collection at The Huntington. Find us at The Brody Botanical Center at The Huntington, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, California.

This year, I believe there will be four demos each day, all concurrent, and all by very talented bonsai artists. The auction and raffle are always outstanding. And can sneak off at some point to see the GSBF's permanent collection a few hundred yards away from the Bonsai-a-Thon. Well worth a day, IMO.

I even got to meet Ian's main squeeze :) I will definitely be there!

Stayed almost the entire day for the event. Grabbed a corking jade from Frank and a twisty kishu from Gary at Chikugo-en. From the demos I liked Michael Sykes' foemina the most and went to see if Frank had some for sale but they were all sold already. The auctions were pretty fun to watch--had I participated about the only things I would be able to afford were the Harry Hirao stones. They had pumic bags--the equivalent of at least one large flat rate box worths for $5, lava for $10, and 14L akadama for only $25! I almost bought a bag but considering I already did the majority of the repotting for this season I decided to save my money. Overall it was a pretty fun event. I'm still relatively new to the bonsai community and don't know many people in it but I hope to participate more in the next few years and meet some of you guys in person.

Other display trees: the shohin and non-junipers

Didn't get all of Maria Kapra's shohin because they were behind glass and by the time I was there, the glare was horrible for photography.

Here is the montezuma cypress and foemina.
I'll just take these photos out for now since you have them posted already.
