Chopping up wood with a band saw to express a likeness of a real tree is a bit strange to me.

It reminds me of Walter Pall praising "kitsch" during a demo.

And to me, this is kitsch.

Personally, I don't like it, I wouldn't put it on a shelf at home, no more than I would put a ceramic band of dwarfs on my lawn (my lawn is, er, "naturalistic" most of the time : dandelions, poppies, field flowers and even a wild orchid that apparently found the place cosy last year).

But that's just a matter of taste and I don't pretend to be a master in that domain...

By the way, happy new year everyone.

I don't like it. I think it tries too hard to be a sculpture of a bonsai, instead of a sculpture of a tree.

If you have ever been in the High Sierras you will understand what the elements can do to a living tree. Those chain saw experts are trying to emulate this element. If it's not your thing then don't do it but we shouldn't be critical of those who do especially; if they do it well.

There are all kinds of talented people. Here as in some of your locations, we have people that create (art ?) in the form of carved tree trunks using chainsaws. Eagles, bears and other animals. Some are really good, you may find it a little redneckish, but I enjoy looking at them as a last chance to save part of what once was a large and very old tree from the fireplace.

Like it or not, it is more likely to generally be considered art than the Bonsai that inspired it.

As a matter of fact I have spent a few days camped in the High Sierras. I will never forget it. It gave me a new perspective on how valuable certain "natural" things are such as clear air, clean water and ancient trees. It was also good to get the batteries re-charged. Now I believe somethings wood should be used as a medium and somethings wood just doesn't work. Chain saw carving is kitsch and wasteful just like making fake trees out of wood. There should be a law against it, I don't care how good the quality of work is.

You most certainly are welcome to your opinion. I highly disagree with your statement that there should be a law against it. Using that same logic one could justify the same attitude against any form of pruning or wiring to achieve some sort of favorable image. In fact if you take that to extremes one could argue against any form of collecting. How would you rate Kimura's work? How do you rate Walter Pall's work? If you don't like what they do could you explain why?

Now before you jump on the above, I did not say that you said any of the above other than what you actually said. I suggested that your logic is flawed and inconsistent, and if taken to logical ends could be interpreted as saying the ridiculous. Again; how do you rate Kimura's work, especially his dead wood work?

Before I involved in your Easter egg hunt, lets try to ground this thing with some basics. Here is what trees are for, to make logs to construct a shelter or to rest against after a long day on the trail. The rope is for climbing and descending from higher places. When surrounded with this beauty, one needs no Idols or kitsch art work. It's the real thing and there is no substitute for it.

I need coaching from this gang like I need a hole in my head. Sorry I wasted your time. The feelings are mutual, just remember you verbal predator types need normal everyday people to feed off of with your massive runaway egos, without us you have no life, you chase everyone away and then what are you going to do?

Come on, you make some off the wall statement like you think chain saw work on bonsai (aka carving of dead wood) should be against the law and assume no one is going to challenge you? I gave it to you that you are entitled to your opinion, up to the point of making it against the law, then response became an imperative. I believe in having an open mind, but gee whize, don't let your brains fall out. Then to top it off you start calling people names.

One thing about this board, it's not for the faint of heart. That's why I mostly lurk. You not only take down the game, but you feed on the carcass and then a vulture or two will pick the bones.
