Yep, those juniper are certainly dead. Don't keep any temperate deciduous or coniferous species indoors for significant lengths of time.
I agree, tropical or a few subtropical species could do well for you in that seemingly very well lit indoor location. A ficus, in good quality "bonsai" potting media/mix should do well, as sorce said and is an excellent beginner tree. Species like Ficus nerifolia and Ficus benjamina, "Green Island" Ficus, just to name a few of MANY. Schefflera arboricola is as easy as the commonly used ficus, and easily produces aerial roots that extend to the soil line. If you want something a bit more advanced, try a buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus). The latter tropical species prefers full sun.
Depending on where you are located in Texas, you may be able to keep tropical species outside 8-9 months out of the year.
If you must have a juniper, grow it outside, in full/almost full sun and keep evenly moist, not wet and never allow to completely dry out. This can actually be a challenge long-term, because all it takes is once, and the tree is gone.
